Abdullah Abdulkhaleq – Activists
In the context of the ongoing financial crisis and the challenges faced by both the public sector and the Kurdistan Regional Government, we observe that the Iraqi government, under the leadership of the President, continues to funnel resources towards the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a militia group often touted as “national.” However, in reality, these forces are frequently operating without formal recognition or legal status, causing significant harm to both the Kurdish and Arab populations.
Our criticism is directed at both the President and the central government. Public funds should not be allocated in silence to support the PMF, particularly when the Kurdish administration is facing delays in paying salaries to its own public sector workers.
The notion that the PMF is “supporting the people of Iraq” warrants closer scrutiny. What tangible service has this group provided to the Kurdish people? In many major cities, there has been growing unrest, with youth being detained, and militias displaying force. This is not support—it is coercion.
If there is a legitimate allocation of funds for security forces or political agendas, it must prioritize services for civilians such as teachers, doctors, police, and other essential workers—those whose efforts directly impact the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
A Call for Accountability:
If the PMF is genuinely committed to the protection of Iraq, the focus must be on the allocation of resources to serve the people, rather than perpetuating political power struggles. This would ensure that any funding is spent on public welfare, rather than political interests.
Criticism of the Iraqi Government’s Priorities:
How long will the Kurdish population be expected to endure the continued misallocation of national funds? How long will Iraq’s budget be used to support entities that do not align with the needs or aspirations of the people?
Our Message is Clear:
Salaries for all public servants, justice for all citizens. The Popular Mobilization Forces should not receive funding at the expense of the Kurdistan Region. The resources allocated for the military must first and foremost serve the lives and well-being of the people.
