Masoud Barzani has made it clear that he is not in agreement with the current government’s structure, specifically regarding the proposed division of revenues. According to his view, the government’s attempts to establish a 50/50 revenue-sharing system between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad are not adequate. Barzani argues that this framework would ultimately serve only to centralize power and resources, with control over all revenues, including oil exports, being concentrated in Baghdad, and not benefiting the Kurdistan Region as it should.
Barzani further emphasizes that such a system will undermine the economic and political autonomy of the Kurdistan Region. He contends that the people of the region should not be subject to external decisions regarding the distribution of income generated by their natural resources. Rather, he advocates for a more independent and locally-controlled approach to managing the region’s wealth, which would also support its people and industries, such as oil production and trade.
Furthermore, Barzani warns against selling Kurdistan’s oil to external markets under conditions that exploit the region’s resources for others’ gain. He opposes agreements that prioritize Turkish interests, specifically those allowing for the cheap sale of oil at discounted prices, which would harm the region’s long-term economic stability.
Ultimately, Barzani insists that the future of Kurdistan should lie in the hands of its people, and that the government must prioritize local economic growth, justice, and the fair distribution of resources.
