In a democracy, the media should act as a “fourth power.” It watches what the government does, shares people’s opinions, and makes sure citizens can get information. In the Kurdistan Region, the number of TV channels and media outlets has grown a lot since the 1990s, but media independence is still a big question.

The closure of NRT is one of the most well-known examples of this problem. NRT often criticized the government and ruling parties. The authorities said they closed it for legal reasons, but many people saw it as an attack on a media voice that opposed those in power.

This shows a deeper problem: most media in the Kurdistan Region is linked to political parties, either through money or editorial control. This makes it hard for media to be truly independent and sometimes turns outlets into political tools rather than sources of public information.

Having many channels does not mean there is real freedom of expression. True freedom means media can criticize leaders without fear of being shut down or punished. When opposition media is seen as a threat instead of a normal part of democracy, it reduces public trust and limits open discussion.

Even though laws in the region support press freedom, they must be applied fairly. Laws should not be used to pressure or punish journalists. For democracy to grow, society must allow dissenting opinions, even if they are uncomfortable.

In conclusion, the NRT closure was not just a legal issue; it tested how much the Kurdistan Region allows criticism. Strengthening freedom of expression requires political will: media must be free from party influence, journalists must be protected, and society must see disagreement as healthy, not dangerous.
