March 5, 1991: A Revolution of Hope, Betrayed by Corruption and Injustice

Today marks the anniversary of the historic Kurdish uprising on March 5, 1991, when the people of Kurdistan rose up against the brutal Ba’ath regime. It was a time of immense hope a battle for freedom, dignity, and a better future. Our people sacrificed everything, believing they were building a just and prosperous Kurdistan.

Yet, 33 years later, what has become of that dream? The victory of 1991 has been stolen. Those who once fought for liberation now endure oppression, poverty, and betrayal. The same authorities who claim to represent the people are consumed by self-interest, leaving the nation to suffer while they enjoy power and wealth.

Public salaries remain unpaid, forcing hardworking citizens into financial despair while politicians indulge in extravagance. Essential services are crumbling; electricity shortages, failing healthcare, and an education system in ruins have become the daily reality, all while the country’s wealth is shamelessly plundered. Unemployment is reaching alarming levels, leaving young people with no opportunities, no future, and no hope in their own homeland. Justice has vanished, as the government silences those who dare to speak the truth while corruption flourishes unchecked.

Is this the Kurdistan we envisioned in 1991? Is this the future for which our martyrs gave their lives?

The people of Kurdistan deserve better. We cannot remain silent while our rights and future are stolen. The revolution was never meant to serve a corrupt few it was a fight for the freedom and dignity of all.

Now is the time to demand real change. The spirit of March 5, 1991, must not remain a mere memory it must be a rallying cry for justice and action.
