On 1 September, approximately 1,000 Kurdish political activists, community members and representatives of Dakok organisation took part in a major demonstration in London. The march began outside the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representation and concluded at the Iraqi Embassy. The demonstration focused on a number of political and institutional concerns in the Kurdistan Region, including the continued inactivity of Parliament, delays in the formation of a government, concerns regarding the functioning of the judicial system, the difficult economic situation, and restrictions affecting freedom of expression. During the gathering outside the KRG Representation, photographs of demonstrators were observed being taken from inside the building, including from windows displaying the Kurdistan flag. The incident was noticed by participants and raised concern among those taking part. The fact that individuals participating in a public political demonstration were photographed from within the official KRG Representation is relevant when considering the visibility of Kurdish political activity in the United Kingdom and the extent to which such activities may come to the attention of institutions connected to the Kurdistan Region. Dakok remains committed to supporting peaceful political participation, freedom of expression and the right of individuals to raise political and human rights concerns without intimidation.
