On July 21, 2025, the DAKOK Organization for Right and Freedom held a significant commemorative activity in Newcastle to mark the 17th anniversary of the assassination of Kurdish journalist Mama Hama. This tragic event occurred in 2008 in the holy city of Kirkuk, Kurdistan, where the journalist was murdered in front of his own home by forces affiliated with the Kurdish authority due to his critical reporting and coverage of controversial issues concerning Kurdish officials.
During this memorial gathering, participants also condemned the recent killing of Hassan Barzi, who was shot dead by party-affiliated militias just last week in the Balakayati area during protests against the lack of salaries and public services. His death represents another tragic loss in the ongoing struggle for basic rights and dignity.
Furthermore, Dakok organization strongly denounced the attack and torture of lawyer Shwan Sabir, who was assaulted and injured by armed members affiliated with the party just days ago. These violent acts against legal professionals demonstrate a concerning pattern of intimidation against those who defend justice and human rights.
Through this activity, DAKOK reaffirms its unwavering commitment to stand against the oppression and tyranny exercised by Kurdish authorities against journalists, activists, and civil society members throughout the Kurdistan Region. We remain dedicated to defending the fundamental rights of press freedom, peaceful expression, and human dignity.
Our mission continues: to advocate for justice, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that the voices of truth and accountability are never silenced through violence or intimidation.
