Gailan Karim – Dakok Trustee
In today’s reality, where everyone becomes a victim of the grave damage caused by those in power, it has become clear to us that, in the past, I am Kurd was nothing more than a slogan used to sell out an entire nation to the world’s centers of exploitation for the benefit of two ruling families. On this betrayal, they have grown fat while all of us have been left in ruins.
The way these two families operate—each through its own party, in separate zones of control—has enabled them to take over every single state institution. In one party, an official simply makes a phone call from their office, and ministry employees immediately carry out their orders. The system is so centralized that in a large city like Sulaymaniyah, it feels as though only one man has the right to act without permission: the party leader himself. Everyone else, even ordinary citizens, must first obtain approval to meet even the most basic needs of life.
Tragically, nothing remains under the name of judicial authority. The courts have been reduced to theaters dressed in yellow or green—the colors of the ruling parties. Likewise, no force remains to protect the people of Kurdistan; all that exists now is the protection of the private interests of the two ruling families.
Power, law, and authority—all of them—can, in the blink of an eye, decide the fate of any individual in this nation, turning their life upside down, if the KDP and PUK do not agree on a matter.
On the other side, the opposition parties—though now mostly a thing of the past—did at one point represent the angry and disillusioned masses. Through elections, they sought to bring clarity and direction to this chaos, though ultimately, as the saying goes: darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
The recent events make it plain for all to see: in the Lalezhar attack, the judiciary failed, the attackers failed, the defenders failed—yet only Sulaymaniyah stood on the side of truth, for the sake of its people, who refused to bow down to injustice.
