Ranj Bakhtyar Saeed – Activist Sardasht Osman: Victim of a Free Pen: Sardasht Osman was a Kurdish journalist and student who was kidnapped in Erbil on May 4, 2010, and his body was found in Mosul two days later. This young journalist was assassinated due to his courageous writings, in which he heavily criticized corruption, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and Masoud Barzani. Although a government investigative committee attempted to pin the crime on extremist groups, his family and human rights organizations strongly rejected these findings, emphasizing that Sardasht only wrote about the monopolization of power rather than religious topics. Sherwan Sherwani: Continuing Suppression: The suppression of free voices continues to this day, as seen with Sherwan Sherwani, who was unjustly sentenced to an additional four years and five months in prison in August 2025. Before his original prison term ended, security forces offered him release on the condition that he stop criticizing the government, but his brave refusal led to the fabrication of new charges against him. In April 2026, Sherwani announced a hunger strike in the Erbil Reformatory Prison to protest the denial of his basic rights and the authorities’ refusal to transfer him to a prison in Sulaymaniyah. Courts as a Weapon: As political activists, it is clear to us that the regional authorities use the judicial system as a weapon to intimidate independent journalists and cover up their corruption. Local and international organizations have repeatedly condemned these glaring violations and demanded an immediate end to these unfair, politically motivated trials. We must keep the memory of Sardasht alive and continuously support Sherwan to help bring an end to this dark era of authoritarianism in Kurdistan.
