On the anniversary of Kurdish Journalism Day, we commemorate not only the long and proud history of Kurdish media, but also the sacrifices of journalists who dedicated their lives to truth and freedom.

Kurdish journalism, born more than a century ago, has always been a voice for a people struggling for identity, justice, and dignity. From its very beginning, it bore the weight of the struggle, spoke out against oppression, and kept the spirit of resistance alive.

Yet today, unfortunately, freedom of expression in Kurdistan is facing one of its darkest times. Journalists are being silenced, voices are being restricted, and the space for free speech is continuously shrinking. Reporting the truth has become a risk, and those who dare to speak out often face pressure, intimidation, or worse.

May this day be not only a celebration, but also a moment of reflection and responsibility. A free press is not a luxury—it is a necessity for any society seeking justice and progress.

On this occasion, we stand with every courageous Kurdish journalist who continues to speak the truth despite the challenges. Their voice is important. Their work is important. And the future of Kurdistan depends on protecting the freedom of speaking, writing, and listening.
